Man Utd snoozefest proves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made huge transfer mistake over one player

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be disappointed after watching Manchester United scrape a win against Astana in the Europa League.

The Norwegian gave a number of youngsters the chance to impress against the Kazakh outfit but the majority did not seize their opportunity.

For the bulk of the match, United pressed for an opener but every time they got close they fluffed their chances.

Marcus Rashford was the biggest culprit for the club’s profligacy, with a number of shots either straight at the keeper or dragged wide.

The last time the Red Devils were in this competition, Jose Mourinho was at the helm.

Like him or loathe him, The Special One simply knew how to win games.

The Portuguese coach won the Europa League during his time in charge and it is largely down to one player.

Marouane Fellaini is another man at Old Trafford that divides opinion but United fans cannot deny he came up trumps when the club needed him.

The Belgium international was so adored by Mourinho that he forced his bosses to hand him a new contract as he current one ran down.

However, when Solskjaer took over from the ex-Chelsea coach one of his first actions as the ostracise the big-haired midfielder.

In the nine matches him and Solskjaer were working together, Fellaini played in just two of them.

He was quickly offloaded to China but these nights are bread and butter for the ex-Everton man.

Jose Mourinho was a huge fan of Marouane Fellaini

Astana will not be the last team at Old Trafford to set up the barricades in the Europa League but Fellaini would be the perfect battering ram.

En route to their Europa League glory in 2017, he scored a vital goal to help knock Celta Vigo out in the semi-finals.

He also featured for the full 90 minutes as United beat a talented Ajax side in the final.

The Red Devils may have emerged victorious tonight against Astana – but more talented outfits await them.

And Solskjaer could find himself wishing he kept hold of that big Belgian.
