West Brom coach odds-on favourite to complete Hawthorns exit

West Bromwich Albion U23 coach Michael Appleton is the overwhelming favourite to take over at Lincoln City.

The Imps were in talks with Newport boss Michael Flynn, but that has fallen through, leaving the Baggies man the sole front-runner.

Our sister title LincolnshireLive have claimed that Appleton was in attendance on Tuesday night as the League One side drew 1-1 with Rochdale.

It is suggested that Appleton is keen to get back into senior management and is the 1/2 favourite to replace the Cowleys who have left for Huddersfield.

A poll on LincolnshireLive showed 57% of supporters would be happy, should they appoint the former Oxford United manager.

Appleton’s departure would serve as another blow to the club’s Academy that has seen notable departures in recent months.

Mark Harrison has left the Hawthorns for Aston Villa, whilst exciting youngsters Louie Barry and Morgan Rogers were snapped up by Barcelona and Manchester City respectively.

Albion’s sporting director Luke Dowling confirmed on Monday that the recruitment process for the academy was complete after the announcement of Richard Stevens as the new manager.

Dowling said: “Richard’s arrival completes the recruitment we have undertaken at academy level.

“I’m delighted with the appointments we have made and believe we have added some tremendous experience as well as coaching expertise.

“Our academy deserves its enviable reputation but I know Richard and the guys around him will all want to do even better in the years ahead. It remains a vital area of the club’s operations.

“The journey from young player of potential to first-team regular remains the key feature of development and we now have a core of staff in key positions who understand that process.”
