The funny comment Ancelotti made to Klopp following Liverpool’s loss to Napoli
Carlo Ancelotti certainly saw the funny side of his team’s 2-0 win over Liverpool on Tuesday evening.
Two late Napoli goals courtesy of Dries Mertens and Fernando Llorente sealed the win for the home side.
The result means Liverpool have now lost a Champions League group stage tie in Naples for the second season in a row.
“I told him: ‘Don’t you worry, if you lose in Naples, then you end up winning the Champions League!” he told reporters.
“I thank Klopp for saying we can win this competition, but it’s a long way to go.
“Now we must think about progressing to the knockout stages.”
The Anfield outfit’s European record is slightly worrying, however. Klopp‘s side have not won an away group stage match for almost two years, last winning on the road against Maribor in October 2017.
Despite this, Ancelotti believes Liverpool are the best team in Europe.
“The strategy was to play a complete game,” he added.
“High pressure if possible, but also defending deeper if needed.
“We did everything well. We have to get used to the different moments of the game.
“When Liverpool were in control we did well in defending and then took our chances.
“It was a very balanced game. So we did well, because I consider them the best team in Europe.”
Liverpool’s Premier League form is a lot more convincing.
The Merseyside club have won all five of their domestic games so far.
Liverpool face Chelsea on Sunday afternoon (4pm).
