Ex Wolves man given a huge challenge as Arsenal and Manchester United chase the next big thing and Liverpool eye midfielder transfer

Billericay Town have announced that former Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Jamie O’Hara will take over as first team manager.

In a statement released by the National league South club, it was confirmed that Billericay chairman Glenn Tamplin had relieved Harry Wheeler of his duties over ‘a difference of opinion’.

O’Hara was in the dugout for Billericay’s latest league fixture against Oxford City, which ended in a 2-2 draw and will now take the job on a long term basis.”/>

The statement read: “We can now confirm that Harry Wheeler has been relieved of his duties and has left the club after a recent meeting with the owner.

“Differences of opinion have led to the decision and the owner feels changes needed to be made.

“Jamie O’Hara will take control of first team duties and will look to immediately make his mark by looking at bringing in some young talented academy players to add to the good experience we have.

“From all at the club we wish Harry all the best for the future and we thank him for all his efforts and successes in his time here.”

Billericay find themselves in 7th place currently, with the ex- Wolves midfielder still playing an active role on the pitch.

The 32-year-old is a less than popular figure amongst the old gold masses after playing his part in the club’s double relegation.

In all he played 55 times in the league for Wolves, before leaving for Blackpool in 2014. He would go onto have spells with Blackpool, Fulham and Gillingham before signing for the Essex club in 2017.

Elsewhere in the Premier League

Manchester United are reportedly set to look to raid Leicester for a second straight summer by launching a bid for James Maddison.

The Red Devils paid a world record £80million fee for a defender to tempt the Foxes to part with Harry Maguire this summer and now have their sights on his former team-mate.

Fellow England international Maddison, handed his first call-up by Gareth Southgate last month, looks set to cost at least £60million after proving his worth in the Premier League.

But  The Times  claim he is top of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer‘s wish list and the club are ready to launch their bid next summer.

Maddison was kept relatively quiet as United’s revamped backline, led by Maguire, shut out the Foxes in a 1-0 win at the weekend.

But Solskjaer remains a huge admirer of the England Under 21 playmaker.

Klopp interest

Liverpool have been linked with Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz after he helped consign them to defeat in their Champions League opener.

European champions  Liverpool  began the defence of their title with a  2-0 defeat away to Napoli  , who sealed the points thanks to a controversial Dries Mertens penalty and a goal from Fernando Llorente.

Spain midfielder Ruiz could have got on the scoresheet himself with two good chances.

The 23-year-old, who has been likened to Spain and  Barcelona  legend Xavi, is a No8 who likes to dictate the tempo of the game.

However, he differs from the traditional idea of a Spanish ball-playing midfielder in that he is 6ft 2ins and can hold his own in a physical game.

And it is believed he is being monitored by Liverpool, as well as Real Madrid and Barcelona in his homeland, according to  Mail Online  .

Ruiz, who joined Napoli from boyhood club Real Betis for £26.7million last year, models himself on Xavi – so if Liverpool do swoop for him, they may have some persuading to do to sign him if interest from Barcelona is genuine.

“I fell in love with football thanks to him,” Ruiz has said of  Xavi  . “He was a pillar for Barcelona and Spain for so many years and I dream of following in his footsteps.”

Two late goals at the San Paulo ensured Liverpool started their Champions League defence with a disappointing defeat.

Arsenal lead race

Arsenal and Manchester United are reportedly set for a transfer battle to land teenage Sunderland star Logan Pye.

The teenage defender, who can play centrally or at full-back, is attracting serious interest and looks set to depart the North East for one of the Premier League’s top clubs once he is old enough in the next transfer window.

The England Under 16s international has been tipped to move to Old Trafford but, according to  The Sun  ,  Arsenal  are now leading the race to acquire his signature.

Pye, who will turn 16 in October, was linked with a United switch worth around £500,000 plus add-ons in the summer.

Phillips on Villa

Kalvin Phillips has revealed the text message Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa sent to him at the start of a summer of transfer speculation.

The midfielder was one of the Championship’s best performers last season and was rewarded with a place in the division’s PFA Team of the Year.

A superb campaign brought about interest from Aston Villa, who were keen on recruiting Phillips as they looked to upgrade the squad for the Premier League.

The 23-year-old was lined up as an anchorman to foil attack-minded pair Jack Grealish and John McGinn.”/>

But the two clubs couldn’t agree on a fee with Leeds demanding above what decision-makers at Villa Park were willing to pay.

It has been suggested that Villa offered up to £25m but that was still below what the Whites wanted in order to sell their prized academy graduate.

But there were fears at Leeds that Phillips could leave after they lost out to Derby in the play-off semi final and he has now revealed the text Bielsa sent in the days after that defeat.

“I got a message saying that he wanted to meet me,” Phillips told LeedsLive. “But then it didn’t happen. So I didn’t know what was going on.

“He didn’t really speak to me, I think he just had his trust that hopefully I’d stay, and that I’d seen how hard he’d worked and how hard the club has worked to try and get the club back to the Premier League.”

Scouting mission

After spending nearly £150m and bringing in 12 players, Aston Villa were one of the most active clubs in football in the last transfer window.

Dean Smith quickly went about rebuilding his side after winning promotion at the end of May.

Although Villa brought in from the domestic market, much of their business was done in the European market with Villa bosses looking to unearth some gems across the continent.”/>

Three players arrived from the Belgian league, including record signing Wesley Moraes – whilst Trezeguet arrived from Turkish side Kasimpasa.

The Egyptian international was signed after a scouting mission to the African Cup of Nations, where Smith and sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch took in a game.

And it appears that Villa decision makers are already looking at the next potential batch of arrivals with scouts in France watching a top flight game.

Twitter account @scoutsinattendance have confirmed that officials from Aston were in place during Bordeaux’s home win over Metz.

It was not confirmed who they were monitoring, but the hosts came out as 2-0 winners with a pair of goals in the opening ten minutes. Jimmy Briand opened the scoring with his second of the season, before his strike partner Nicolas de Préville made it two only minutes later.
