Why Jurgen Klopp has called Napoli ‘cheeky b******s’ before Liverpool Champions League tie | Football | Sport

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was jovial ahead of their Champions League game against Napoli but has not forgotten how the Serie A side got the better of his team in Naples last season.

And looking back on the game in southern Italy, Klopp jokingly labelled Napoli “cheeky b******s” as they had disguised the formation they were playing during the clash.

A last minute goal from Lorenzo Insigne secured Napoli a 1-0 win back in October last year, in a match where Liverpool failed to get a shot on target.

However, the Reds did go on to win the reserve fixture by a single goal when the sides met at Anfield two months later.

And although Klopp has not quickly forgotten that game in Naples, which he describes as his side’s “worst performance of the season”, he is confident there will not be a repeat performance tonight.

“To make it very simple, we played against them in our defending like they had one number six, but they had two sixes, the cheeky bastards!” Klopp said with a smile.

“We knew before, and we did tell them – we tried to change it in the game, but nobody listened and nobody could change.

“In the end they were lucky they scored [a late goal] but we were lucky it was only 1-0. It was really this kind of off day.”

Liverpool have made a fantastic start to their Premier League campaign and are the only team in the league who’ve won all five of their opening matches.

Napoli have also made a strong start to their season winning two of their three opening games, with the only loss coming via a 4-3 defeat to last season’s Serie A champions Juventus.

Klopp has played down Liverpool as favourites heading into the tie but thinks the Reds still have a chance to take something away from the match if the players stick to the game plan.

“We have to invest whatever we have. We cannot play against Napoli deep in your own half, that doesn’t work,” Klopp added.

“So we have to do what we are good at but make sure it fits for Napoli and then we have that chance there but we don’t go there as a favourite.

“Yes, we won the competition last season but you know it is difficult.

“They are a very strong side, runner up of Italy two or three years in a row, really close to Juventus this year so it is a really strong team.”
