Trent Alexander-Arnold compares Napoli star to Eden Hazard ahead of Champions League tie | Football | Sport

Liverpool take on Napoli tonight in the Champions League as they start their defence of the title.

The Reds travel to Naples for a difficult start to the group stages, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side having made a good start in Serie A.

Alexander-Arnold will be faced with the difficult task of marking the left-winger, who has had an electric beginning to the season.

Mertens has scored three in three in Serie A so far this campaign, and will look to keep his run of form going tonight.

But Alexander-Arnold insisted he was up for the challenge of dealing with the 32-year-old.

“Obviously he’s a really good player,” the youngster said.

“He’s someone who really helps them play football, understands the way that they want to play, really encourages the team to play out. They are able to hit [it to] him and he’ll be able to hold the ball up.

“He’s a really tricky player, really strong, fast, quite agile.

“He’s kind of like Eden Hazard I’d say, that type of player who is tricky to get hold of and mark.

“Coming up against him is always a tough test but they’re the things that you expect in the Champions League.”

Alexander-Arnold expressed that he believes Mertens is under-rated, and that Liverpool will have to be cautious of him throughout the game.

The 20-year-old defender has also enjoyed a strong start to the season, with two assists from his opening five Premier League games.

“He’s a great player, probably a little bit underrated in terms of the respect and the plaudits that he gets. But he’s a real fantastic player,” he continued.

“I think his team-mates will say the same and the people that come up against him will say how tricky he is to actually nullify.

“He’s a good player, they’ve got many a good player and we need to be ready for that.”
