Gary Neville reveals surprise over Man Utd flop – ‘I don’t know what happened to him’ | Football | Sport
The 30-year-old only managed to score five goals in 45 appearances for the Red Devils since he joined the club back in January 2018.
United thought they were getting an in-from striker with the Chilean having scored eight goals in all competitions that season for Arsenal before making the switch to Manchester.
And in the previous campaign the former Barcelona striker had found the back of the net 30 times in 51 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners.
But Neville is not sure what happened to the forward who was rewarded with a reported salary of £400,000-a-week to swap the Emirates for Old Trafford.
“We’ve watched Alexis Sanchez before during his years at Arsenal, he’s tenacious, a goalscorer, giving his all every single minute of every game,” Neville said on Sky Sports Monday Night Football.
“No-one could have foreseen the disaster that was about to happen with Alexis Sanchez.
“I don’t know what happened to him.
“That wasn’t the Alexis Sanchez that played at Arsenal.
“He wasn’t [really] old when United signed him. He’d been proven.”
This summer United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer decided to send the striker out on loan and Sanchez has joined up with former United striker Romelu Lukaku at Inter Milan, after the Belgian was sold this summer.
However, Inter cannot afford to pay all of his wages, so United are still paying Sanchez a reported £175,000-a-week to play for another team this season.
And Neville admitted that while United knew they would only be getting a few years out of the player, he thinks few people would have predicted there would be such a catastrophic drop in form from a player who had recently shown a great eye for finding the back of the net.
“We knew United would get only a couple of years out of him, I know his wages were massive,” Neville added.
“But my point is, no-one could have foreseen how bad he would be for the club.”
