Chelsea predicted team for Valencia clash amid injury concerns

Chelsea make their return to the Champions League at home to Valencia tonight, but Frank Lampard has an injury crisis on his hands at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues will be full of confidence after picking up their second win under Lampard on Saturday, coming in a 5-2 thriller away at Wolves.

Tammy Abraham stole the show at Molineux, netting a superb hat-trick, while fellow academy graduates Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount also got on the scoresheet.

Lampard will hope his side take that attacking form into this evening’s Champions League curtain raiser, which will be Chelsea’s first outing in the competition for 18 months.

Nevertheless, he will be without a host of key players when Valencia come to town.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is still not close to a long-awaited return, while Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James will not be involved despite playing for the Blues’ Under-23 side on Friday.

And joining them on Lampard’s ever-growing injury list are Antonio Rudiger, Emerson and N’Golo Kante.

Rudiger only returned from a five-month spell on the sidelines at Wolves, but the Germany international was forced off at half-time with a groin problem and is therefore unavailable tonight.

But the Blues will be without a host of key players tonight, including Kante (left) and Emerson

Kante has missed Chelsea’s last three outings with an ankle injury, while Emerson – who has been one of Lampard’s best performers early on this term – picked up a knock on international duty with Italy last week.

It would be a surprise not to see Kepa Arrizabalaga keep his place in between the sticks.

After a much improved display at Wolves, Lampard is expected to stick with the back three that served them well in that clash, with Kurt Zouma starting alongside Andreas Christensen and Tomori.

Captain Cesar Azpilicueta is likely to start at right wing-back once more, while Marcos Alonso will occupy the left flank in Emerson’s absence.

In the centre of midfield, Jorginho is expected to partner Mateo Kovacic.

Mount has been one of the Chelsea’s brightest sparks so far this season and is a banker to get the nod in attacking midfield next to Pedro, whose Champions League experience may be required here.

And leading the line will surely be none other than Saturday’s hat-trick hero, 21-year-old Abraham.

Chelsea predicted team (3-4-2-1): Kepa; Zouma, Christensen, Tomori; Azpilicueta, Jorginho, Kovacic, Alonso; Pedro, Mount; Abraham
