The Marvelous Nakamba scout report Aston Villa fans should read before West Ham clash

Marvelous Nakamba made his long-awaited debut for Aston Villa against Crewe in the Carabao Cup last month.

Now, the summer recruit prepares to take on West Ham United for his Premier League debut.

The Zimbabwean anchored Villa’s midfield with two-goal hero Conor Hourihane and the impressive Henri Lansbury in front of him at Gresty Road as Villa hit the Alex for six in the cup.

Nakamba, a £10.8million summer signing from Club Brugge, returned from an injury lay-off after representing his country at the African Cup of Nations three months ago.

He’s been building up his fitness ever since, doing extra sessions at Bodymoor in a bid to get back up to full speed.

This is how our man at Villa, Ashley Preece, rated Marvelous’ performance that night as he looks forward to his top flight bow.

BirminghamLive’s dedicated Aston Villa reporter Ashley Preece wants to hear from you, the fans.

Have you got a Villa-related story to tell? Do you want to get something off your chest about a recent performance? Or have you got any brilliant match day videos or photographs you’d like to share? Well, you’re in the right place.

Our man said: “I want to get amongst the fan base who pay their hard-earned cash to follow the boys in claret and blue, giving supporters a voice about all things AVFC, whether it’s a talking point from a game or an incident or issue not being dealt with, drop me a line and get in touch. As always, up the Villa!”

THE GOOD BITS

Made angles for fun in the middle of the park, knows exactly how to turn his body so teammates can find him for a pass in tight areas. More defensively-minded than Douglas Luiz and likes to sweep up the danger. His trademark is a swivelling, sweeping slide tackle, did that twice in the game, winning the ball from off a Crewe midfielder to thwart an attack.

He’s got a trick in him too, which was evident when he dragged the ball back to leave a Crewe wide man for dead while he nutmegged another with a cheeky Cruyff turn.

Didn’t put a foot wrong in truth, was pressurised by Crewe’s Callum Ainley who played on his toes but, as the game went on, found it easier and easier. Tougher tests will come, make no mistake about that, but Nakamba got some much-needed minutes in the legs and impressed throughout.

THE BAD BITS

Was fairly quiet in truth, such was our player rating of 7. It was not his game, though. Villa were on the front foot but did have some scares, which mainly came down the left-flank.

There were only a couple of heart-in-mouth moments when Nakamaba collected the ball off the back line but he dealt with everything, such was his confidence and composure on the ball. Nothing bad from a 6-1 thumping, and wasn’t at fault for Crewe’s consolation.

The early signs are good.

THE SUMMARY

A very slick operator, it has to be said. Anchored Villa’s midfield well and things will only get better for Nakamba in claret and blue now.

Does have his work cut out to edge out Douglas Luiz in the holding midfield role but he’s a completely different player as he’s much more defensive-minded – and Smith will no doubt turn to him depending on the Premier League opposition.

Took an extravagant pot shot from range but, all in all, it was a solid showing from Nakamba, who’ll be a key member of Villa’s squad. Fast, slick on the ball and positionally good.

Didn’t see too much of him which is exactly what you want from your defensive midfielder, screened the back four admirably.
