Paul Merson has said that it is “already too late” for Tottenham to catch Liverpool in the table, despite Spurs’ 4-0 hammering of Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Mauricio Pochettino‘s side looked shaky prior to Saturday’s match but cruised to victory against the Eagles in their best performance of the season so far, with Son Heung-min scoring twice as the hosts netted all four goals before the half-time whistle.
Writing in a column for Sky Sports, Merson said that while Pochettino’s side looked back to their best, they have already lost too much ground on Liverpool in the table.
“Tottenham made Crystal Palace look average. They are a team that have won away to all the big teams, but in the first 45 minutes, Spurs were back to the side we all know on Saturday, but for me it’s already too late for them to catch Liverpool,” the pundit said.
Merson also picked out Spurs midfielder Harry Winks for special praise saying: “Harry Winks is such a massive player for them, the way he gets the ball moving quickly. They’ve got the movement of Son, Kane and Lamela.
“They looked a proper team and as soon as the first whistle blew, they meant business. They rolled the ball back to the centre-half, the lumped it forward and Winks put it over the bar within 10 seconds.
“The fans didn’t have to wait. They took the game to Palace, and they didn’t know what day it was.”
