Chelsea Ace Wants To Stay & Win Trophies At Stamford Bridge: Should Lampard Extend His Contract?
In a recent interview with the Evening Standard, Chelsea midfielder Willian disclosed that he wants to extend his stay at West London and win trophies under Frank Lampard’s stewardship in the coming years. The Brazilian playmaker told the Evening Standard that he loves playing for the Pensioners and said, ‘From my side, I want to stay.
‘I have one year left and I want to stay because I like to play for Chelsea. ‘I love this club, I love to live in London and my family loves it here. I have been here six years already so everything is perfect for me.
‘Of course [there is more I want to do at Chelsea], win the Champions League! I want to win more titles here, I want to play more games, to score more goals so everything that I can do, I will try hard to do.’
Willian’s Incredible Career In England
Since joining the West London giants from Anzhi Makhachkala in the summer of 2013, Willian has gone on to make a total of 296 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 52 goals while creating 53 assists on all fronts. He has also won the Premier League twice and the FA Cup once during his time at Stamford Bridge thus far. However, his current contract with the Pensioners will expire at the end of this campaign, so it is no surprise that the Brazilian trickster wants to extend his stay at the English capital.
The 31-year-old has lost a yard of pace from his game as he is slowing down with each campaign. Therefore, this might be his last chance to win trophies for an elite club at the highest level. Willian was a former teammate of Frank Lampard at Chelsea so he would know that the English manager will give it his all to bring success back to the West London club.
The former Corinthians talent is also vastly experienced at the international level, having featured in 69 matches for Brazil while registering nine goals for his nation thus far.
What Does The Brazilian Offer On The Field?
On his day, Willian can be a match-winner for Chelsea as he is a potent goal-threat from long range. Even though he doesn’t have the pace to beat his marker nowadays, the Brazil international is full of tricks and can deceive the opposition using body faints and stepovers to wreak havoc in the final third. When he is playing with confidence on the field, the Pensioners star can still be one of the most creative wingers in English football.
Should Lampard Extend Willian’s Contract?
Willian is not a guaranteed starter under Lampard’s tutelage so he will have a point to prove in training so that he can regain his first-team place at the Bridge. With matches coming thick and fast for the Pensioners in the coming weeks, it could be an ideal opportunity for the Brazilian talent to return to form and help his team compete across all competitions.
All in all, Willian has been a loyal servant to Chelsea, so he deserves a contract extension even though he is not guaranteed regular game time at West London anymore. Lampard should consider offering him a new deal to keep him at the club beyond next summer.
