Aston Villa fans to break into 23rd minute applause against West Ham United in memory of Mitchell Pountney


An Aston Villa fanatic who tragically died following an incident at work is set to be honoured with a minute’s applause.

Father-of-one Mitchell Pountney was fatally injured at a business premises in Rowley Regis earlier this month.

His heartbroken friend Josh Hazlett quickly launched a Twitter campaign, calling on Villa fans to pay tribute to him at the next home match against West Ham United, which will take place on Monday, September 16.

He described his friend as a “great dad” and urged his fellow fans to take part in a minute’s applause to honour him.

Emergency services were called to a business in Station Road at around 10.57am on on Monday, September 2 , but the 23-year-old, from Stourbridge , had suffered multiple serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Writing on Twitter on the following day, Josh said: “Can everyone please help me get something done on behalf of Aston Villa at their next home game?

“Sadly my friend lost his life in a critical work injury and sadly got pronounced dead at the scene.

“He was a massive, massive Villa fan so on the 23rd minute can we all have a round of applause for my mate Mitchell Pountney?

“He wasn’t just a mate who I played football with, he was a person who I classed as a brother.”

Josh, who initially thought he would be unable to attend the match due to work commitments, has now revealed he has secured time off and will be at Villa Park to start the applause.

Following Mitchell’s tragic death, a spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “Police were called following an industrial accident in Station Road,  Rowley Regis , just after 11am on Monday, September 2.

“A man in his 20s was sadly confirmed dead at the scene.

“The case been passed to the Health and Safety Executive.”

A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive confirmed an investigation was under way, adding: “HSE has made enquiries and our investigation is ongoing.”
