Former Harry Maguire teammate questions comparisons to Virgil Van Dijk

Harry Maguire’s former teammate Neil Collins has insisted that the Manchester United defender should not be compared to Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk.
Maguire and Van Dijk recently became the two most expensive defenders in the world, with the former signing for the Reds for Liverpool for £75m in January 2018 before United snapped up Maguire for £80m earlier this summer.
Van Dijk has arguably been Liverpool’s best player since he joined from Southampton and, speaking to The Telegraph, Maguire’s former Sheffield United teammate Collins said that Maguire cannot be immediately compared to his fellow defender.
“[Maguire will] be compared to Van Dijk but I think Van Dijk was the final piece of the jigsaw at Liverpool, whereas I’d argue Harry is one of the first pieces in this jigsaw at United, which is a really big ask,” Collins said.
“They’ve not got a great side, and I think Harry’s got a lot on his shoulders, but he is up there with the best in the world in that position and, as they improve as a team, I think he will go from strength to strength.
“Maybe these players have to go to a Southampton or Leicester to really prove themselves to the big clubs but he definitely ended up costing United a lot more money.”
