Man City fans rage after Kompany hails Virgil van Dijk as Premier League’s ‘best ever’
Manchester City fans were left seething after their former club captain Vincent Kompany named Virgil van Dijk as the best centre-back in Premier League history.
Van Dijk is the favourite for the Ballon d’Or this year ahead of the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi after a brilliant first full season at Liverpool.
The Reds won the Champions League and came agonisingly close to claiming a first league title in 29 years, narrowly missing out to Kompany’s City side in the Premier League title race.
Ahead of his Manchester City testimonial at the Etihad on Wednesday night, Kompany was asked where he ranks himself among the all-time best centre-backs in the Premier League.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Kompany said: ”I never try to compare. My journey is different, I’ve had to deal with different tools and for me to not play this game, let’s not escape the irony. So I’ve had to deal with that and I’ve tried to be substantial for my team.
“I would bring it back to Virgil van Dijk, he’s not been on the scene as long as Terry, Ferdinand who have been around for a long time but the signs he’s shown in the last few years show if he had been around longer he’d have been at the top for a long time.
“The Liverpool before van Dijk and after are a completely different set up so I’ll give him that one.”
“Good old Mancunian sarcasm,” said one fan.
“This is a joke right? In all time he’s not top 5,” said another.
“No no.. Take it back vinny,” wrote another City fan.
While another said: No Vinny, you are the best, over a sustained period of time!”
Kompany was ironically injured for his testimonial that pitted a Manchester City legend side against a Prem XI team.
The game ended 2-2 with all proceeds raised going to Tackle4MCR – the initiative Kompany set up to address rough sleeping and homelessness.
