Kompany names Van Dijk as Premier League’s best ever centre-back

Unexpected answer from Kompany

Former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has named Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk as the best centre-back in Premier League history.

Kompany left the Premier League at the end of last season after 11 incredible years at the Etihad.

The Belgian played 360 games, scoring 20 goals and assisting 11.

After departing Manchester City, Kompany has now returned to Belgium as a player-manager for boyhood club Anderlecht.

Though, he’s now returned to England for his testimonial.

Ahead of the game, Kompany has been doing several interviews and he was asked on Wednesday afternoon who he’d say is the best Premier League central defender in the history of the competition.

Despite having the choice of players such as himself, John Terry, Tony Adams, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, Kompany named an unexpected defender.

“The Liverpool before Van Dijk and after are a completely different setup. I’ll give him that one”

That’s because he named Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk as the Premier League’s best ever central defender.

Kompany claims that while he’s not been around as long as others, ‘he’d have been at the top for a long time’ if he had.

“I would bring it back to Virgil van Dijk, he’s not been on the scene as long as Terry, Ferdinand who have been around for a long time but the signs he’s shown in the last few years,” Kompany explained, as quoted by Goal.

“He’s shown if he had been around longer, he’d have been at the top for a long time.

“The Liverpool before Van Dijk and after are a completely different setup. I’ll give him that one.”

Vincent Kompany ruled out of his own testimonial with hamstring injury

Even though it’s Kompany’s testimonial, he won’t feature tonight.

The Belgian has been forced to rule himself out of the game due to a hamstring injury.
