Man Utd Ed Woodward warning sent to Edwin van der Sar amid director links | Football | Sport
Edwin van der Sar has been warned about the battles he would face with Ed Woodward at Manchester United if he returned to the club as director of football.
United are reportedly desperate for someone to take care of off the field matters with former goalkeeper Van der Sar favourite for the role.
But transfer expert Duncan Castles has warned Van der Sar about what to expect from executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward if he returns.
“The clear indication [in the summer] was that Ed Woodward did not want to cede control of transfers to whoever was appointed,” Castles said on the Transfer Window Podcast.
“The indications from some of the conversations with candidates have been that there haven’t been guarantees that the person coming in will get that mandate.
“That’s obviously of concern to some of the candidates as it looks like they’re being brought in as a front man, as a figurehead so that the club can say ‘We have appointed a director of football, we are taking steps to improve the management of the club’.
“But actually, the same people remain with ultimate say of who, what, where the money is spent in the transfer market, where the contracts are going to be.
“You then effectively have a scapegoat if things continue to go wrong.”
Van der Sar is not the only Manchester United hero to have been linked with the role.
Rio Ferdinand and Darren Fletcher are also believed to be on United’s shortlist though Castles believes the Dutch star is the best option.
He added: “Of the candidates we’ve heard, Edwin van der Sar is very impressive in the sense that he has done an excellent job at Ajax.
“He is more experienced than the individuals like Rio Ferdinand and Darren Fletcher, he’s been working in the executive area for some time now.”
