‘It doesn’t get much better than that!’ – Tamworth skipper Ryan Beswick on Nuneaton Borough victory
Ryan Beswick reflected on an FA Cup win over Nuneaton Borough and admitted: “It doesn’t come much better than that!”
Skipper Beswick netted a first-half penalty to lay the foundations for Tamworth’s 3-1 victory over their local rivals.
And the former Borough man said he was happy to step up to the plate and take responsibility for the spot-kick.
“It’s always nice when you score, in general, but against your old club, in a local derby, it doesn’t come much better than that,” he said.
“I used to always be on them (penalties).”
“But I missed a penalty in pre-season – I have only missed two in my life.
“So it was nice to get that one in.
“It was a pressure moment for the team because it was such a big moment in this game.
“I have the armband on for a reason so I wanted to lead by example and fortunately put it away.”
Beswick believes Saturday’s derby saw the Lambs produce their best performance of the campaign to date.
He said: “Prior to the game, we knew the first 20 minutes would be hectic, 100 mile per hour stuff.
“We felt whoever scored the first goal, it could be key to the game.
“Thankfully, it was us and, once we went 2-0 up, we dominated the first half and it was the best we have played this season.
“The way the front three clicked, it was a lot better than it has been and you could see that with how many shots and crosses we have got off in the box.”
“In the second half, we went 3-0 up and they had nothing to lose.
“They kicked it long and threw men up. We dealt with it in the most part except for the one blip.”
“I just feel the way we have played, dug in, defended and attacked, it was a joy to be involved in that performance.”
Beswick now wants to use the cup success and kick on in the league.
“We have seen cup runs affect teams in the league but for us it’s a great feeling to win and we want to take it into the league,” he said.
“We have won four of the last five now and hopefully it’s another step in the right direction.”
