Ed Woodward moves Man Utd board meeting… to Old Trafford cricket ground

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward held a high-level board meeting yesterday at Old Trafford – but not the football ground.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have endured a mixed start to the season.

They first thumped Chelsea 4-0 in their opening fixture, but have subsequently dropped points in draws with Wolves and Southampton, as well as suffering a shock defeat at home to Crystal Palace.

There will have been plenty for Woodward and co to mull over during the international break, and the Daily Mail claim they did so ahead of yesterday’s fourth Ashes test.

Woodward held a management meeting down the road from their home in a corporate box inside Lancashire’s pavilion, before he and staff went to the balcony to watch the latest battle between England and Australia.

It was a miserable afternoon for the hosts, who are now unable to regain the urn after falling 2-1 behind in the series with just one more test to play.

One topic of conversation for Woodward and his fellow United bigwigs could have been former goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

According to the Daily Mirror , Woodward still wants to bring in a director of football at the club and regards Van der Sar as the standout candidate.

The Dutch legend is currently the CEO of Ajax, but he would be required to refine the Red Devils’ approach to recruitment if he returned to Old Trafford.

Woodward is also believed to have spoken to the likes of Darren Fletcher, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra about returning to United in some capacity.

Van der Sar and director of football Marc Overmars have raked in over £200m on Ajax player sales in recent years, offloading Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong to Juventus and Barcelona respectively this summer.

The 48-year-old made 266 appearances in a six-year spell at United, clinching four Premier League titles and the Champions League.
