LaLiga: Simeone: Fernando Torres is an absolute legend of football
LaLiga Praised former teammate
Diego Simeone has paid tribute to former teammate Fernando Torres, who retired from professional football on Friday.
Simeone played alongside Torres at Atletico Madrid and spoke about the striker during press conference ahead of facing Leganes on Sunday.
The Argentine then coached Torres when the Spanish striker returned to the club following several years playing in the Premier League and Serie A.
“Fernando is very intelligent, an absolute legend of football. He’s earned his place in the sport through hard work, commitment and respect for others,” Simeone said.
“He’s always had a great personality, as a person and player.”
Like Simeone, some have suggested that Torres will move into coaching and his former boss is ready to face him in the dugout.
“I imagine he’ll take some time to prepare himself and do whatever he wants and respond to his responsibility.
“Let’s hope it’s not too long because then we could meet each other.”
Simeone is preparing to play Leganes without his only natural left-back, with Renan Lodi suspended after his red card against Getafe last week.
“We feel quite good with the defence, we’ve got cover and we’ve got other options in this position like Saul,” the Atletico boss said.
“Manu Sanchez is improving a lot and could help us out.”
Diego Costa will also miss the trip to Butarque through injury, but Simeone isn’t worried.
“We’ve seen him in some matches, he was good with Morata and they shared the pitch,” he said.
“Now he’s recovering to come back stronger like when he played in the friendlies and we hope that he can train with the group next week.”
Atletico are looking to add Rodrigo Moreno to their squad before the transfer deadline, while they’re also aiming to offload Angel Correa.
“It’s complicated, I’ve known since pre-season that he wouldn’t be able to play the first two matches and he’s trained brilliantly,” Simeone said about Correa.
“The club will decide what’s best for everyone.
“I want everyone, I don’t want Rodrigo because he’s not our player. I’m talking to you about who I do have, and Correa is one of those.
“It’s a complicated situation for everyone: players, coaches, clubs…
“I don’t like the fact that LaLiga starts before the transfer window closes, it would be better that everyone started with who we’ll have for the season. It would be healthier for everyone, but it’s not up to me.”
