This is Aston Villa’s main goal threat – and it’s not Wesley

Dean Smith admits Aston Villa’s most-potent goal threat is midfielder John McGinn.

The Scot bagged Villa’s first Premier League goal in three years at Spurs on the opening day and, last week, came close twice against Bournemouth with two speculative drives.

With £22million Wesley yet to hit the back of the net, Smith says McGinn’s the man who looks most likely to score for Villa – and not the Brazilian.

“I think our most likely goal-scorer at the moment has looked like it’s going to be John McGinn,” says Smith.

John McGinn of Aston Villa celebrates after scoring

“He’s made some really deep runs into the opposition half. Saying that, Jack Grealish had a really good chance last week, Wesley teed up Trezeguet for a good chance. Neil Taylor even got in the opposition box last week and had two chances. So we’re creating chances, we just need to start taking them. I’m sure [the goals] will come.”

Villa host Everton under the lights in B6 on Friday and Smith’s expecting a “real tough game”. Everton have registered 10 clean sheets in their last 14 games and will be a tough nut to crack, with Smith adding: “They were a top 10 club last season and have spent money as well, looking to push into the top six.

“They’re defensive organisation has been very good. They look like they’re very well coached and tough to breach, as Palace and Watford have found out already this season.

“But they haven’t scored a lot of goals as well, just the one this season. I think the bookies have made them favourites to win at Villa Park but I’m sure our players will have something to stay about that.”
