‘So glad we didn’t’ Aston Villa fans are delighted they didn’t complete this transfer

Aston Villa fans have been thanking their lucky stars that Dean Smith opted for Tom Heaton to be the answer to their goalkeeping issues.

Finding an upgrade on Jed Steer was arguably Smith’s number one transfer priority in the summer, with a whole host of names linked.

One of those names was Stoke City and England keeper Jack Butland. The former Birmingham City man reportedly wanted out from the Championship club, in order to pursue his international aspirations.

It is believed that Villa were keen on the 26-year-old but couldn’t match the £20m+ valuation, the Potters put on his head, with Villa eventually signing Tom Heaton for around £8m.

And unfortunately for Butland, his start to the season in Staffordshire could scarcely have got off to a worse start. Nathan Jones’ men are marooned in the relegation zone after failing to win any of their opening three games in the league.

But his poor start hit a new low in the game with Preston on Wednesday night, Butland was at fault for both of the goals his side conceded at Deepdale as they trailed 2-0 at the break.

Following the second error, Villa fans on social media were left feeling rather thankful about how the whole transfer saga unfolded.
