Roy Hodgson gives verdict on start of Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s Manchester United career

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson says that his former player Aaron Wan-Bissaka has made an ‘excellent’ start to his career at Manchester United.

After a long chase United signed Wan-Bissaka for £45million, rising to £50million, this past summer in order to make a significant, long-term improvement to the right-back position.

The 21-year-old impressed during pre-season and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has wasted no time in making him a first-choice part of his defence.

Wan-Bissaka has repaid the faith shown in him with two brilliant displays in United red so far, helping to keep a clean sheet in the 4-0 opening weekend thrashing of Chelsea and then putting in a Man of the Match performance in the 1-1 draw with Wolves.

His old boss Hodgson has also been impressed and he sang his praises ahead of the Eagles’ trip to Old Trafford on Saturday, which will see Wan-Bissaka face-off against his boyhood club.

“I thought he was excellent, yeah. I think he’s fitted in very well,” Hodgson said in his pre-match press conference.

“I thought his performance in particular against Wolves was outstanding and we don’t need reminding of how good he is because we were lucky enough to benefit from him being so good for a year-and-a-half here before he left us.”

Hodgson also discussed the allure of playing at Old Trafford but didn’t sound too confident that his side will be able to get a result.

Old Trafford has always been a very daunting place to go if you need a result and unfortunately if I look back on my record at Old Trafford it doesn’t really measure up to any high degree of scrutiny, but that’s because they are a top team, a very top club.

“They really have the ability to sign players that we will never have so I think like all clubs when you go to Old Trafford it’s an opportunity, it’s a great occasion because that’s a place where every footballer wants to play. Every footballer in the world would like to say ‘I’ve played at Old Trafford.’

“So in that respect it’s a great occasion. If you’re saying ‘this is a must win game how do you feel?’ Then it’s not quite so good because it’s not going to be easy to make that a must win game.”
