‘Sort out’ Birmingham City keep their fingers crossed as Barnsley boss makes Blues admission

Birmingham City are hoping to have Jefferson Montero available when they take on Barnsley at St Andrew’s.

The winger, who joined on a season-long loan from Swansea City, is yet to feature for Blues since his move went through.

Blues have been awaiting international clearance for Montero, which is why the 29-year-old missed the 3-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Pep Clotet’s side struggled to create chances at the City Ground and the head coach is keen to bring Montero into his squad to offer a new option going forward.

“We just hope that Swansea and the Welsh FA sort out the clearance and the player is ready to play with us soon,” Clotet said at the weekend.

Boost for Barnsley

Barnsley midfielder Alex Mowatt could be set to return to the squad for the clash.

The ex-Leeds United man has missed the last two games for the Tykes after suffering a side strain in their Championship clash with Sheffield Wednesday at the beginning of August.

Daniel Stendel’s men had to settle for a point last time out after conceding a late penalty against Charlton in their 2-2 draw.

But Stendel’s assistant Chris Stern, has confirmed that Mowatt, who was so influential to ensuring Championship football returned to Oakwell, could be available for Tuesday night.

He told The Yorkshire Post : “He does have a chance to play tomorrow.

“He is being assessed at the minute and we are going to see how he performs in training and how fit he feels and we are going to make a decision after training after all the opinions from medical staff and coaching staff.”

Blues’ opponents have no other injury concerns and make the journey with an impressive recent record at St Andrew’s. They are unbeaten in their last five and have won three of their last four in Birmingham.

Stern has said that he hopes to extend his side’s good record on Blues’ patch. But he admitted: “We have a good record at Birmingham, but it is a totally different game than previous games.

“For them, they will be hoping to show a different performance than the weekend and we hope we can keep our good record, but it is a new game.”
