Manchester United great Gary Neville fumes over Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford penalty debate
Paul Pogba was upended by Conor Coady with the scoreline at 1-1 in the 68th minute yet Marcus Rashford, who converted a spotkick eight days earlier in the 4-0 drubbing of Chelsea, let Pogba take it and the Frenchman had his effort saved by Rui Patricio.
Pogba scored eight penalties last season for United but also failed against Burnley, Everton and Southampton, whereas Rashford has an immaculate record.
Rashford scored in England’s World Cup shootout win over Colombia last year and completed United’s Champions League recovery with an added time spotkick at Paris Saint-Germain in March.
In 2002, former United captain Roy Keane denied Diego Forlan permission to break his duck with a penalty in a Champions League second leg qualifier against Zalagerszeg with United 3-0 up and 3-1 ahead on aggregate. Ruud van Nistelrooy stepped up and made it 4-0 in a game United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played in.
“Before he took the penalty I was fuming,” Neville said on Monday Night Football. “However we have looked back at the penalty last week that Rashford took against Chelsea and Pogba had a long chat before. I don’t like it.
“Why is there a debate on who takes a penalty? Pogba has missed four in the last 12 months – so you would think he’s had his chance now. Rashford scored last week, take the penalty.
“But there wasn’t a leader on the pitch. You saw the clips there, [Daniel] James was there, [Anthony] Martial, they couldn’t make a decision between them. Something is not right there.
“Initially I was fuming with Pogba. ‘Typical you, you’re selfish’ Why you even thinking of taking a penalty off a player?’
“Actually last week’s one, it’s weird, something is not right. Solskjaer is going to be able to shed light on it.”
“Tonight there was a debate between martial, James, Rashford and Pogba. It was more like, ‘go on mate you have it’. This is not right by the way.
“Look here comes Paul Pogba, now Lingard is getting involved. Is Pogba the penalty taker and Rashford has taken it off him? I’m holding back on Pogba because he may be the penalty taker here. It isn’t right.
“They should decide before they play. This is not right. This is a Manchester United penalty. This is not tombola. This is not five a side. Rashford throws the ball to Pogba. Something is not right.”
