Gini Wijnaldum reveals why Liverpool struggles are encouraging as he sends Arsenal warning | Football | Sport

Liverpool and Arsenal are the only two teams in the Premier League who have won both of their opening games, however, that winning streaks will end for at least one of the clubs as they will meet at Anfield for a top of the table clash this Saturday.

The Reds began their campaign with a 4-1 win over Norwich before beating Chelsea on penalties in the mid-week clash in the UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul, Turkey.

Liverpool then beat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s last weekend, but Wijnaldum insists the club have yet to find the performances that saw them dominate in the league and win the Champions League last season.

“It is encouraging that we are getting results without being in top form,” Wijnaldum said.

“It is important, especially at this time of the season, that you collect as many points as possible because basically, you have to improve during the season and that is what are trying to do and what we want to do.

“But it is also important to collect as many as points until you are at your best. It is really important that we have won the game at Southampton.”

Last season Liverpool only lost one league game as they missed out on their first Premier League title by one point to Manchester City, and Wijnaldum reiterated the importance of winning games this season.

“I don’t think you always see a team play well for 90 minutes,” the 28-year-old said.

“We just have to make sure we win games. Basically it doesn’t matter how you win games, you just have to learn and use that experience that you have because we won’t play a game 90 minutes counter pressing or everything goes well during a game.

“You have to use your quality and your experience and still try to win the game.

“I think that is more important than playing well over the whole 90 minutes because that is really impossible.”

Arsenal began their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle and followed that up with a 2-1 win over Burnley at the Emirates.

Gunners boss Unai Emery is seeking a top four finish this campaign and the Spaniard will be looking for Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang along with new club record signing Nicolas Pepe to help him achieve that.

Last season, Aubameyang and Lacazette scored a combined 35 goals and 13 assists between them and both have already opened their accounts this season.

And Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has warned his former club they could be punished by the trio if they don’t improve in their defensive displays.

“When you think of Aubameyang, Lacazette, Pepe maybe coming on also,” Carragher said on Sky Sports Monday Night Football.

“When I say Liverpool have got away with it, the quality of the opposition hasn’t been top class, and I said it after the Norwich game, if they were playing a top team today, they wouldn’t have won. Considering they won 4-1, it’s a big thing to say I suppose.

“But the quality Arsenal have, if Liverpool get caught in those positions and don’t run back they’re going to have major problems within the game.

“Of course, Liverpool are going to cause big problems going the other way I have no doubt about that, but the chances, the shots on goal they’re allowing at this moment, better quality teams, better quality strikers are going to make Liverpool pay.”
