Full transcript of Neville and Carragher tirade on Manchester United penalty ’embarrassment’
But the former United defender was also quick to look back at last week’s penalty incident to realise Pogba may actually be the lead man when it comes to penalties.
However, Pogba’s recent record with penalties for United has led to a furious reaction from fans, who believe Rashford should have taken the spot-kick.
Here is everything that Neville and former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher said on the incident.
“Before he even took the penalty I was fuming. The only reason I’m holding back, and four years ago when Mirallas took the ball off Baines I called it a despicable act, but we’ve looked back at the penalty from last week,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“Before the one that Marcus Rashford took last week against Chelsea, Paul Pogba walked up to Marcus Rashford and they had a long chat.
“I’m not sure if Marcus Rashford took the one off Paul Pogba last week and Pogba should have been taking that one. They had a long chat again and I don’t like it.
“Why is there a debate over who is taking the penalty. There is a penalty taker and that’s it. Pogba has missed four of them in the last twelve months. You would think he’s had his chance now.
“Rashford scored last week and should have taken the penalty. They couldn’t make a decision between and something is not right there.
“Initially I was fuming with Pogba. I thought, ‘this is typical you, selfish, why are you even thinking of taking a penalty off a player’. But after watching last week’s penalty, it’s weird, something is not right and it’s embarrassing.
“What makes me think Rashford is not the penalty taker is that he throws Pogba the ball. It’s not right. Only Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can shed light on it.”
Neville added: “Tonight there was a debate between Pogba, Martial, Rashford and Daniel James when the penalty was due to be taken. There was a little chat and it wasn’t decisive and then it was like, ‘go on mate you have it’.
“Rashford won the penalty against Chelsea and Pogba was 40 yards away. Martial went over to him and asked whether he was having it. Pogba then came into play as Rashford put it down. Who is the penalty taker?
“Something is not right there in hindsight. We have only noticed this because of what has happened this week. The only reason I’m holding back is because of what happened last week. Pogba might well be the penalty taker. But we decide which piece of analysis we are doing before we come on, they should decide who takes the penalty. It’s embarrassing.
“Pogba won the penalty tonight and this is not right. This is a Manchester United penalty not a tombola. This is not under fives on the playground. James probably says ‘is this right? You scored last week’.
“What makes me think it’s Pogba’s is that Rashford throws him the ball.”
Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher added: “It’s not the worst penalty I’ve ever seen. We have criticised him previously. Something is not right with the manager or the players. I hate it when the manager comes out and says, ‘the players sort it out themselves’.
“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has to be stronger as a manager if there is more chance of someone else scoring.”
Neville added: “Some managers do tell the players to decide. Even if that’s the case, the guy who scored last week should take the penalty.”
