Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives update on Alexis Sanchez Manchester United future

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has refused to rule out Alexis Sanchez leaving Manchester United before the European transfer window closes on September 2.

Inter Milan have enquired about Sanchez’s before the Serie A window closes in two weeks’ time and United are believed to be open to letting the Chilean leave since Solskjaer considers him surplus.

Inter have expressed interest in Sanchez, 30, but United sources have told the MEN reports Inter officials flew to London for talks are inaccurate. There have been suggestions from sources outside United that Sanchez’s agent Fernando Felicevich is sensationalising interest in his client in a bid to force through a move within the next fortnight.

“There’s still a couple of weeks left of the transfer window,” Solskjaer said after United drew at Wolves. “And there is a chance some clubs have shown interest in Alexis, so we’ll see what happens. Can’t update you more than that.”

United identified Inter as potential suitors for Sanchez months ago and the Nerazzurri coach Antonio Conte is keen on a winger, having let Ivan Perisic move to Bayern Munich on a season-long loan.

Inter were reputedly eyeing a loan move for Gareth Bale midway through the season had he joined Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning. Jiangsu are owned by the Suning Appliance Group that is the sister company of Inter’s owners, Suning Holdings Group.

The MEN reported in March Solskjaer was unconvinced by Sanchez as United settled on a transfer strategy change ahead of the summer window. Sanchez is United’s highest earner on £400,000-per-week but started just 13 times last season and only completed 90 minutes in the Premier League opener against Leicester. He has scored five times since joining from Arsenal in a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan 19 months ago.

Sanchez struck up a close friendship with new Inter signing Romelu Lukaku at United and would doubtless relish reuniting with the Belgian in Milan. Sanchez previously played in Italy for Udinese between 2006 until 2011.

On Friday, Solskjaer claimed Sanchez wanted to remain a part of the United squad and the club was organising more behind-closed-doors friendlies to get him up to speed. Sanchez missed pre-season due to his Copa America commitments.

“Alexis is such a professional and he comes in working every single day really hard,” Solskjaer said. “And he wants to be a part of this and it’s these stories he’s again that he’s been put in the reserves, of course he hasn’t. He’s a part of our squad and a very, very good player.

“He’s had three weeks now, he’s a few weeks behind the rest but he’s close to being part of it. We don’t have the biggest forward line in numbers, so Alexis might end up playing a lot more games than you expect, because we expect him to come good at this club, he’s quality.

“We’ve had a behind closed doors game, and he’s training, he’s doing a little bit of extras, he’ll be gradually integrated into more and more playing time, but we’ll have more behind closed doors games. With one game a week now, it’s hard to keep players ticking, so we’re arranging a few of them.”
