Gary Neville slams Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford for ‘embarrassing’ penalty debacle vs Wolves

United were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolves on Monday night.

Anthony Martial opened the scoring in the first half, but Ruben Neves’ wonder strike just before the hour mark set up the fixture for a blockbuster finish.

The Red Devils had a golden opportunity to pick up all three points after Pogba was brought down in the Wolves box.

But the Frenchman missed the spot kick after discussions with Marcus Rashford over who should take it.

Pogba and Rashford had extended discussions about who would take the penalty against Wolves and Chelsea

The England striker took a convincing penalty in the 4-0 win over Chelsea last week.

But he looked to be snubbed by Pogba this week, who has now missed four in the last 12 months.

Former United captain Gary Neville ripped into the pair after the game, admitting he was “fuming” with Pogba before he had even taken the set piece.

“Before he took the penalty I was fuming,” he said on Sky Sports.

“Why is there a debate on who takes the penalty? I don’t like it. There should never be a debate. Pogba has missed four in the last 12 months. You’d think he has had his chance.

“Rashford scored last week – take the penalty. But there wasn’t a leader out there. Something wasn’t right. They couldn’t make a decision between them.

Neville insists it should be decided before the match who will be taking penalties, describing the current system as “tombola”.

“Initially, I was fuming with Pogba. But when I looked at last week’s penalty with Chelsea, it was weird,” he went on.

“I think Pogba might be the penalty taker here and Rashford took it off his last week. That’s then caused a problem this week.

“It isn’t right. We don’t come on air tonight and ask each other which pieces of analysis we’re doing – we decide before we come on. They should decide in the dressing room – it’s embarrassing.

“This is a Manchester United penalty – this isn’t a tombola. This is not under fives football on the playground.”

It was later confirmed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that penalty duties are shared by the players.
