Former Manchester United player explains why VAR is causing problems

Former Manchester United midfielder Kleberson has urged the Premier League to make stoppages in play for VAR (Video Assistant Referee) decisions as brief as possible, amid controversies.

This season is the first in which the technology is being used in the English top flight, with incidents in games involving Man City — against both West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur — already sparking debate.

Kleberson warned Premier League referees that they cannot use VAR too much and that the delays cannot be too long.

Speaking to Your-promotional-code.co.uk the Brazilian said: “VAR is becoming a big discussion point. We use it in Brazil and it’s unbelievable, it takes five to six minutes to decide, it’s unreal. The game can’t stop for five minutes.

“When I watched the Premier League, the game was flowing and decisions one took one minute. It can help make the game better, but they cannot afford to stop for a long time, it doesn’t benefit the teams. I hope it comes to help the teams and not give us more to discuss. The referees can help but can’t have too much power with using VAR all the time.”

The former United midfielder, who played under Sir Alex Ferguson during an unsuccessful two-year Old Trafford stint, then spoke about his former side and the impact made by new signings.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James both impressed in United’s 4-0 win over Chelsea last week and Kleberson has been impressed by the new additions.

“I think Aaron Wan-Bissaka has still got things to improve on but he’s a solid defender, you can see he has quality,” he added. “But it was his only his first game. A lot of players prepare well for their first game but we need to see how he does for the upcoming games.

“Daniel James has impressed me. It’s good to see a player like that who is very fast in the Premier League. If you are direct and quick in this league, you can help the team pick up a lot of points. That’s how the Man United fans want their team to play, direct in attack and creating plenty of opportunities.”
