Atletico Madrid: Koke: Every kid dreams of captaining Atletico Madrid, I feel very proud

After Diego Godin departed Atletico Madrid in the summer, the captain’s armband has found its way to Koke.
The midfielder has formed an integral part of Diego Simeone‘s teams over the past few years and is relishing the chance to skipper the side.
“I can’t wait to start the new season and we’re very excited because we’ve completed a great pre-season,” Koke said in a video shared on Twitter.
“Some very important players left, but new players have come in who want to do well and compete.
“I’m sure we’ll be fighting for everything like we always do.
“It’s an honour to wear the captain’s armband.
“I joined the club when I was six years old, and after being an academy player I made it to the first team.
“I’ve been here for many years and I’m very excited and proud.”
Koke is the latest club icon to wear the armband and is following in the footsteps of some of the game’s strongest leaders at Atletico.
“I learned from the best, from great captains such as Antonio Lopez, Gabi, Godin, Raul Garcia and Tiago,” he said.
“Also from very important people who weren’t captains but who shared important values inside the group.
“I tried to learn from them so that I could do my best when the time came.
“It’s important to have a strong group of captains.”
Koke will be joined by the likes of Saul, Jose Maria Gimenez and Jan Oblak as the more senior voices in the current Atletico dressing room.
“Saul has been at the club for a long time, since he joined the academy,” Koke said.
“Gimenez and Oblak came from abroad but have been at the club a long time.
“It’s very important that the four of us manage to share the values with the new players who have just arrived at Atleti.
“I think it’s very important that the four of us are united and are able to manage the group.
“Every kid dreams of playing for Atletico Madrid one day and of wearing the armband, and I’m lucky enough to play here and be the captain.
“I’m very proud of it and I’m living the dream of every young Atleti fan.”
