‘Unbelievable’ Aston Villa star sent message by Micah Richards

Micah Richards hailed Douglas Luiz as ‘unbelievable’ after the midfielder marked his full Aston Villa debut with a goal.

Although Villa were beaten 2-1 by Bournemouth in their first home match in the Premier League for more than three years, the performance of Douglas was a huge positive for Dean Smith’s side.

The 21-year-old, a £15m summer signing from Manchester City, hit a stunning second-half goal as Villa tried, but failed, to restore parity to the scoreline.

And Richards, whose five-year Villa career came to an end in June before he announced his retirement, felt Douglas may have done better with one of Bournemouth’s goals but praised the way the Brazilian responded.

“Unbelievable,” Richards told Final Score. “Before Douglas was at fault for one of the goals, so he maybe tried to do a little bit of a dummy.

“He’s redeemed himself with that goal and it’s a special, special goal to score on your Premier League debut with Aston Villa, so well played to the lad – Grealish again got the assist.”

Douglas’ 71st minute strike came after goals from Josh King and Harry Wilson saw Bournemouth race into an early lead. Villa pushed for a late leveller but the Cherries held on.

After the game, Douglas posted: “What a pride to be in this great club. What a vibe, what a cheer. Unfortunately it was not the result we wanted, but you can be sure that we will battle hard. The positive results will appear.”
