David Alaba has suggested that he could leave Bayern Munich next summer, having been linked with several Premier League clubs in the past.
The Austrian left-back came through the youth ranks at Bayern, making his first team debut in 2010, but is about to enter the penultimate year of his contract – meaning the German side will face a decision next summer over whether to keep him or sell him, rather than risk losing him for nothing.
When asked by Austria Press Agency what the future had in store for him, he revealed: “My focus is on Bayern.
“I don’t know what will happen next year, but I have always stressed that I am a player looking for new challenges — whether that will be at Bayern or elsewhere, I cannot say.”
Back in March, he admitted that he had been an Arsenal fan for his “whole life”, while also saying the only leagues that would interest him if he was to leave Munich would be in England or Spain – where he has been linked with Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Alaba had also been suggested as a makeweight in Bayern’s attempts to sign Leroy Sane from Manchester City, but the Premier League champions reportedly turned down the chance to sign him.
As for the season ahead at Bayern, Alaba confirmed that the club need to make new signings, with Philippe Coutinho agreeing a deal in principle to join them.
“The season lasts a long time, and we need not only a high-level squad but also a big squad.
“I think there should be one or two more players to raise the level of competition and to be well positioned with respect to depth.
“I have faith in our bosses and I think there is still some work to be done.”
