The Liverpool stat that suggests Chelsea are favourites to beat Reds in Super Cup tonight

Chelsea and Liverpool meet in the Super Cup tonight.

The Reds won last season’s Champions League, while Chelsea won the Europa League to set up the clash in Istanbul.

Kop supporters will no doubt have fond memories of Istanbul, with the 2005 Champions League final one of the most euphoric matches in the club’s history.

Of course, Liverpool beat AC Milan on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw on that day, having been 3-0 down at half-time.

And while the Reds will associate Istanbul with victory – their record in the Turkish city is actually less than impressive.

The Merseysiders have played five times in Istanbul in three different stadiums.

But never have they won in 90 minutes.

Their first visit to Turkey’s largest city was in 2002 – a 1-1 draw in the Champions League group stages against Galatasaray at the Turk Telekom Arena.

Then came the infamous final win at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium, followed by a 3-2 defeat to Galatasaray in 2006 in a group stage dead rubber.

Their losing run in Turkey continued as Rafa Benitez’s men were shocked by Besiktas in a 2-1 loss in the now-demolished Inonu Stadium.

Their most recent visit provided no more joy for Liverpool, as the Reds were beaten on penalties by Besiktas in the Europa League in 2015.

So that’s two draws and three losses after 90 minutes for the Kop in Istanbul – a record Chelsea slightly better with a win, a draw and a defeat.

No doubt tonight will be viewed as a clean slate for both sides, with both teams yet to play at the Vodafone Arena.

The stadium became the new home of Besiktas in 2016, replacing the Inonu Stadium, after that was knocked down to make way for the new arena.

Kick off from Istanbul tonight will be at 8pm.
