‘Ridiculous’ Aston Villa favourite performs U-turn over Manchester United transfer comments
Old Trafford chiefs splashed out £80m to land Maguire from Leicester City after chasing the England international all summer.
Ahead of that match, Merson was critical of the move and questioned whether Maguire would be able to adapt to United’s style of play.
But the Sky Sports pundit has now performed a U-turn on those comments, revealing he has also tried to contact Maguire to apologise.
“I thought I was very critical of him [Maguire] on Saturday if I’m being honest, on Soccer Saturday,” said Merson.
“I tried to get hold of him today, I’ll talk to him tomorrow, he text me back. I thought I was a bit critical if I’m being honest.”
Merson has backtracked after launching a scathing attack on United and Maguire during Soccer Saturday.
“I worry for Manchester United, I don’t see any good business here,” said Merson. “Harry Maguire for £80m is ridiculous, ridiculous at the highest level.
“He’s alright. He’ll improve them. He ripped it up with England playing in a three, but when you play in a three at the back you do it for one reason, the defenders aren’t good enough, so you play three because you don’t trust them.
“When he plays at Leicester, they drop back, sit on the edge of the box, they defend with no space behind, the ball comes in, he heads it out and he comes out running with the ball.
“Now he’s at Man Utd, he’s playing on the halfway line, all of a sudden you’re playing against Arsenal , you’re on the halfway line and balls are going over the top for Aubameyang or for Man City going over the top for Aguero and it’s pace, pace, pace.
“I saw a lad once at Birmingham, Roger Johnson, I’m not putting him in the same breath, Maguire is a much better player, but at Birmingham he was brilliant on the edge of the box, heading balls out, blocking, brilliant.
“He went to Wolves , they played him on the half-way line and Shane Long ruined him. Ball kept going over the top, he was retired in about 10 minutes.”
