‘Missing him already’ Aston Villa promotion hero finds new club

Glenn Whelan has sealed a one-year deal with Scottish top flight side Hibernian, after leaving Aston Villa earlier this summer.

The Republic of Ireland international was one of a number of experienced members of Dean Smith’s playing squad that was released following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

Whelan has signed a contract with the Edinburgh club that will see him ply his trade at Easter Road this season.

Speaking on his move, he told the club’s official site: “I’ve been successful throughout my career and this year I’m here now and I’m trying to achieve something as well. The manager’s spoken about trying to get into Europe and pushing on as high as we can.

“I’m not just up here to enjoy myself, I’m here to achieve something. I’m looking to do that with Hearts, a massive club in Scotland and in the Scottish Premiership.

“Everywhere I’ve went and throughout my career I’ve always achieved what I’ve wanted. Like I said, I’m not up here for a jolly up or a holiday, I’m up here to improve players, if I can, and to win games.”

The 35-year-old enjoyed a positive final season at Villa Park, playing 35 times in the league campaign and here’s how the claret and blue faithful reacted to Whelan’s transfer.
