Man Utd news: Dilemma highlighted by Steve McClaren as three stars picked out | Football | Sport
The decision was made after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer informed the executive vice-chairman that he was happy with the resources available.
Mason Greenwood was one of the shining lights in pre-season and there’s hope he can compete for a starting spot this time around.
Marcus Rashford is set to lead the line as he did expertly against Chelsea, scoring two goals.
Manchester United also have Anthony Martial at their disposal, while Daniel James showed he has an eye for a goal in Sunday’s 4-0 thrashing.
But Steve McClaren has raised doubts over the club’s attacking roster, suggesting they are lacking a natural centre-forward.
He told Sky Sports News: “Okay, Martial wears the No 9 but is he a real centre-forward?
“Is Rashford a real centre-forward?
“James, he’s kind of a wide player, not an out-and-out striker.
“So they have to adapt to that and find different ways of playing.
“They did that on Sunday, you saw the first half, they tried to press and Chelsea picked them off.
“Second half they dropped, played to their strengths. Speed on transition, they’re effective.”
Rashford burst onto the Manchester United first-team scene in the 2015/16 season under Louis van Gaal.
Now he’s looking to help Greenwood have a similar kind of impact.
“Mason is quite laid-back,” Rashford told the club’s official website. “He just likes to enjoy his football.
“I always think to myself that he’s not someone who you would necessarily give loads of information to.
“Just tell him a few bits and let him just play; that’s how he gets about with his football.”
