Liverpool fans left baffled at one Jurgen Klopp Super Cup decision for Chelsea clash – ‘He can’t play there’
The newly-crowned European champions are in Istanbul ahead of the clash with Frank Lampard’s team, who won the Europa League last season.
The fixture will mark the first time that two English teams have faced off in the Super Cup and will give both teams the chance of an early trophy this season.
And the German has opted to field a strong team for the game at Vodafone Park, home of Besiktas, tonight. But one decision has left some fans baffled after Oxlade-Chamberlain was included in what looks like the front three, leaving Roberto Firmino on the bench.
The England international has just returned from a long-term injury but usually plays in midfield.
He has featured for the Reds out wide in pre-season but fans are not convinced and have taken to social media to vent their frustration.
“Good to see Ox playing but why is he out wide? He can’t play there,” asked one fan.
“Sure Klopp knows best but Oxlade should be through the middle,” said another.
While another said: “Oxlade-Chamberlain at RW? Somewhere, Arsene Wenger is smiling.”
“Oxlade-Chamberlin’s best position is in midfield. Not sure playing him as a right winger has worked since his arrival,” said one Liverpool fan.
One Liverpool fan thinks playing Oxlade-Chamberlain in the front three could cost their team the trophy.
“Why not just play your strongest team and get the job done early then tinker with it?” they said.
BT Sport pundit Jermaine Jenas thinks it is great for the 25-year-old to be given a starting berth after his injury woes.
“It is just great to see him back and it will be exciting for him,” he said ahead of the game.
“I am sure he is feeling fresh and hopefully he can light the place up.”
