Joel Pereira leaves Manchester United on season-long loan
Manchester United goalkeeper Joel Pereira has secured a loan move to Scottish side Hearts until the end of the season.
The Swiss-born Portuguese keeper heads north of the border with the intention of gaining regular football, following a pre-season period in which he travelled with United but was always braced for another loan move.
Pereira has previously had loan stints with Rochdale, Belenenses, Vitoria Setubal and Kortrijk, the latter of those two coming last season, although the 23-year-old only played 14 games in the entire season across the two spells.
He has made just two appearances for United’s first team since arriving at Old Trafford in 2012 as a 19-year-old — both in the 2016/17 season when he replaced Sergio Romero in an FA Cup game at home to Wigan and started the season finale against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford, played the full game and kept a Premier League clean sheet.
After Dean Henderson went to Sheffield United and other young keepers Kieran O’Hara and Alex Fojticek went to Burton Albion and Stalybridge Celtic respectively, United now have four goalkeepers out on loan.
Pereira’s contract runs until June 2020 with United, so the loan move may mean he has played his final game with the Reds unless an extension is agreed.
