‘It sounds arrogant’ Neville and Carragher on why the Premier League ‘needs’ Aston Villa

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have insisted the Premier League needed Aston Villa back in the top flight.

Dean Smith’s side earned promotion back to the promised land after three years away, beating Derby County in the play-off final last season.

Villa have spent big this summer, with an outlay of over £100m in a bid to ensure they don’t suffer an immediate return to the Championship.

The club have come under criticism from some quarters for their high levels of spending, especially after Fulham operated the same tactic and were still relegated last term.

However, both Neville and Carragher believe the club haven’t made the same mistake as the Cottagers and think they have the best chance of staying in the Premier League.

Speaking to Sky Sports on The BIG Premier League Season Debate, he said: “They’ll have to do a Burnley those clubs (Norwich and Sheffield United).

“They play differently but they’ll have to do that type of miraculous, every season that Burnley stay in the Premier League is a wonder for the.

“Because of the money they spend, the players they have, the manager does an incredible job.

“There are three clubs, Newcastle have been down a couple of time, Villa have been down now for a few years and Leeds have been down for I don’t know how many years.

“Those three clubs need to be in the Premier League. It sounds arrogant to say that but they’re huge clubs and you want them in the Premier League.”

Similarly, Carragher has backed Aston Villa to stay up due to their ‘big-club mentality’.

The former Liverpool defender believes the club needed to invest in their playing squad after being behind the two automatically-promoted sides and now feels they’re status will help them to add a fear factor to travelling teams.

Carragher said: “I think Villa, the difference with the other teams, obviously you came up in the play-offs, before you signed all the players, they’re better than you on paper.

“I think some times with Villa, your mentality is, we’re a Premier League team. I think everyone will feel that Villa are a Premier League team. Sometimes when you go in with that mentality, even if the squads are similar, yours is probably better now with the money.

“Norwich and Sheffield United will probably go in, in some ways, thinking they’re a Championship team going into the Premier League. They might stay up, they might go down but I think that big-club mentality, in your head your thinking it’s Aston Villa away.”
