Solskjaer explains why Andreas Pereira starts over Nemanja Matic for Manchester United vs Chelsea
“Andreas Pereira has grown more and more in pre-season and his energy and goal threat would maybe be the difference today,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports ahead of the game.
Anthony Martial started the game in his new number 9 shirt and Solskjaer explained there will be more pressure on the Frenchman to deliver goals this season.
“Anthony is by nature more of a No 9 than a winger,” Solskjaer said. “He is a goalscorer, tricky, in and around the box so we want him as close to the goal as possible.”
Solskjaer also handed United debuts to Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire and was asked if had given the two new recruits any special advice ahead of kick off.
“Just go and enjoy playing at Old Trafford,” he said. “This is what they’ve been waiting for a long time now and they’re two players we are sure will be fans favourites.”
“Belief and stick to what we have been doing and believe this will take us forward,” Solskjaer said about what he expected from the game. “First game is always an emotional one, always see the first game as so many different things happen, mistakes happen that you can’t normally explain so for me it’s about controlling emotions, staying in the goal if you score the first goal, if they get the first goal stick to what we have been doing the past six weeks.
“Of course you want to build momentum the whole atmosphere around the place. It’s a results business, it’s always the last game you remember and the last game you discuss so hopefully tomorrow morning we will discuss how we got three points.”
