Pep Guardiola claims Rodri will be one of the best Man City transfers in history
The Blues boss handed the Spain international his debut in last week’s Community Shield win over Liverpool, and he had a solid, promising start to his career with the club.
Fernandinho only returned from holiday last weekend after Copa America duty last month during which he suffered a knee injury.
But Rodri is now seen as the starting defensive midfielder, and Fernandinho will have to fight his way back into the team once match-fit.
The Brazil star is also being considered as a centre-back option after the departure of Vincent Kompany.
But Rodri has already made a huge impression on Guardiola, who said today: “Every day I am more convinced that Rodri will be one of the best deals this club has done.
“He’ll be incredible for us for many years.”
Rodri was City’s priority signing this summer, with Fernandinho turning 34 recently, and with just one year left on his contract.
The veteran star could be given an extension, depending on how well he does in the coming season.
