David Luiz: Why Chelsea defender asked for Arsenal transfer on deadline day | Football | Sport
David Luiz is having a medical at Arsenal ahead of an £8million move to the Emirates.
The shock deal will see the 32-year-old become the Gunners fifth signing, with Kieran Tierney likely to follow soon after.
He may not even be a third choice for the upcoming season at Stamford Bridge, according to Sky Sports’ Gary Cotterill.
“David Luiz is about to become an Arsenal player – and it’s after a change in his circumstances,” he said.
“It’s only in May that Luiz signed a two-year deal after a great season under Maurizio Sarri. Even a few weeks ago he was talking about enjoying life under Frank Lampard.
“But it’s been made clear that he’s not certain to be a regular starter under Lampard – he’s perhaps not even going to third or fourth choice.
“Other potential outgoings include Danny Drinkwater, Tiemoue Bakayoko and perhaps Davide Zappacosta.”
Luiz is expected to sign a two-year contract at Arsenal before the 5pm deadline today.
He was training away from the rest of Lampard’s squad on Wednesday ahead of his transfer.
The defender has spent six-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge over two spells.
He spent two years at Paris Saint-Germain in between his two periods at Chelsea.
“If we can on the last day, we will try to sign another centre-back, but one who has the capacity to help us,” he said.
“We tried to sign some important, expensive players for our defence. But when we can’t do that, the second line players don’t really convince us to sign them.”
