Kevin De Bruyne verdict on new Man City star Rodri
The club record signing made his debut for the Blues in the Community Shield win over Liverpool at Wembley.
Rodri is more of a defensive midfielder than Fernandinho, with whom he will vie for a place in the team – or could even sit alongside for certain games.
The new signing had a stiff test for his first game in English football, a clash with main Premier League rivals Liverpool.
But he had the best passing accuracy of any City player and gave a more solid look to the defence when Liverpool attacked relentlessly in the second half.
De Bruyne may benefit more than anyone from his presence, and he gave his verdict on the new boy.
“He did really well,” he said. “He’s a perfect fit for us. I think the way that we did transfers in the last years adds up.
“You see a lot of young talent coming in willing to play our style. I think that’s what they’re looking for and he’s a perfect fit for us.
“I think he’s the perfect defensive midfielder for the way we want to play. Our defensive midfielder is a really difficult position. You need certain players for it and there’s not a lot of people who can do both sides of it.
“Obviously we’re very good on the ball. You can’t just be defensive, you have to be offensive also.”
Rodri was bought as an alternative to Fernandinho, who could now play in his more natural number eight role, or in central defence if required.
And De Bruyne says that Rodri will simply continue to give the platform which the Brazil international has brought to the Blues in recent years.
“It wouldn’t be different with Fernandinho there,” he said. “It’s maybe a difference with last year because I’m feeling physically better than I did last year. I needed more time.
“I think the way he’s performed in pre-season and in training has been phenomenal. To be the new guy and still be on this level is a good sign.”
