Aston Villa handed big double transfer boost as John McGinn to Manchester United earns approval
Warnock’s Etheridge message
Neil Warnock has confirmed that Cardiff City will listen to offers for goalkeeper and Aston Villa target Neil Etheridge this summer.
The first choice Bluebirds stopper impressed last season, despite the club’s relegation from the Premier League, and knows Dean Smith and his coaching staff from their time together at Walsall.
Smith, who has made 10 signings already this summer and isn’t done yet, wants a new keeper but Villa have been frustrated in their attempts so far to land either Jack Butland or Tom Heaton because Stoke and Burnley respectively aren’t willing to budge from their asking prices.
Etheridge, a Philippines international, could be a viable alternative and Warnock has admitted that a deal could be struck provided any interested club makes a suitable offer.
Veteran manager Warnock, tasked with leading the club from the Welsh capital back to the top flight at the first attempt, is happy with his keeping options beyond Etheridge.
“As I’ve said before, we’ll listen to anything,” he told Wales Online. “I’ve not heard anything and I don’t think Neil has. I think we’ve got three great keepers.
“It wouldn’t worry me playing any of three. Joe Day’s had a fantastic pre-season, Smithies is as reliable as anything and Neil is what he is.
“So it wouldn’t worry me if an offer came in for Neil, Smithies or whatever, because I’m very happy in that department.”

Bent finds Douglas deal ‘strange’
The highly-rated Brazilian quit The Etihad for Villa Park last week in a £15million transfer subject to him securing a work permit to play in the Premier League.
“That’s probably the strangest part, that Manchester City couldn’t get it over the line even though he’s a City player, but Aston Villa are confident that they can.
“It’s tough, he didn’t make an appearance for Manchester City. it seems like another good signing, an exciting signing, it’s one of them where you’re not quite sure how it’s going to work.
“Dean Smith is an experienced manager and obviously he’s seen something that Douglas Luiz can help Aston Villa with.”

Tish is available
Aaron Tshibola has been told by Aston Villa boss Dean Smith he can leave the club on a free transfer.
That’s according to the Daily Mail, who report that League One Doncaster Rovers are interested in bringing the midfielder to the Keepmoat Stadium.
Tshibola, who is still only 24, has been a Villa player since 2016 when he was brought to the club during the short-lived rein of Roberto Di Matteo.

Phillips playing ‘waiting game’
Kalvin Phillips is reportedly willing to play the waiting game to get a move to Aston Villa.
The Leeds United midfielder, who Dean Smith is understood to be a big fan of, has been the subject of intense interest and a rejected bid from newly promoted Villa, as they continue to put their plans in place for the new Premier League season.
He has reportedly been offered a new deal by the Whites, but wants a bigger salary if he is to commit his long-term future.
Sir Alex ‘wants McGinn at United’
Sir Alex still has influence at the club he managed for more than 26 years between 1986 and 2013, and is reportedly advising those in power within United to make a significant move for Aston Villa midfielder McGinn, who is now a Scotland international.
Ferguson is said to be friends with McGinn’s grandfather and compatriot Jack.
United, under the guidance of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, are desperate to refresh their midfield this summer; they’ve lost Ander Herrera after the Spaniard chose to move to PSG at the end of his contract and have received interest in Paul Pogba.
