Real Madrid: Zidane invents new role for Rodrygo
Real Madrid Tried youngster in midfield against Bayern
Zinedine Zidane sprung a surprise by playing Rodrygo as a midfielder in Real Madrid‘s first pre-season friendly of the summer, with the Brazilian deployed in Luka Modric‘s role and doing so with impressive results.
However, it wasn’t a surprise to anyone in the squad, as Zidane has trialled him in the position during the training sessions in Montreal. It hasn’t been an easy acclimatisation for the teen, but he did well against Bayern Munich.
He recovered four balls – which isn’t a bad return for a 45-minute spell – gave 15 passes and misplaced just one. He drew four fouls and committed three of his own. But the outstanding statistic of his night was that he scored and even contributed to Sven Ulreich‘s dismissal.
“He’s asked me to play on the inside more,” Rodrygo said of Zidane‘s wishes.
“I’m more used to moving around the flanks, but the coach wants me to do this.
“It’s a position I’m comfortable with and I like it.”
Rodrygo was one of the brighter sparks of the match from a Real Madrid perspective as 2019/20 got underway. Zidane has ten forward with him and of those he played seven, with the surplus in this area meaning that solutions need to be found.
Whether it lasts or not, the Brazilian is showing he has a lot to offer Madrid in a number of positions.
