Confirmed: This Aston Villa transfer target has headed elsewhere

Ethan Ampadu – a young player who had previously been on Aston Villa’s radar – has left Chelsea to join Red Bull Leipzig on a season-long loan deal.

The Welsh international – son of former player Kwame – has been permitted a loan move by new Blues boss Frank Lampard and has jetted out to Germany to test himself in the Bundesliga for the forthcoming season.

He joins a number of fellow British youngsters who have taken the plunge and headed to the continent; Jadon Sancho, Reece Oxford and Ademola Lookman are among a host of names from these shores who have either spent time in Germany or are out there currently.

Ampadu, 18, was tipped at one stage to join Villa and become another recruit of what has been a quite remarkable transfer window to date for the club, with more additions expected in the coming weeks.

Clubs in the Championship were understood to be willing to offer former Exeter starlet Ampadu regular game-time too, but the offer of Champions League football has proven to be too great to pass up.

Villa, meanwhile, are close to adding both Trezeguet from Kasimpasa and Douglas Luiz from Manchester City – their ninth and tenth signings of the window respectively.
