‘Complete shock’ Birmingham City fans react to that surprising contract admission

Birmingham City fans have been having their say after Michael Morrison revealed the circumstances around his St Andrews exit.

The former Blues skipper spoke exclusively with BirminghamLive and claimed he left the club after only being offered a one-year extension.

“I didn’t think it would be a long negotiation,” Morrison said.

“We left it to see what was going to happen with stuff and I spoke to Dong just after the Rotherham game when we were safe and he was like ‘Yeah we want to look after you, you have been here for a long time, we know you’ve got a young family and you want stability’ – saying all the right things as such.

“Then the following week he offered me a contract and it was only for a year, we went down the road of ‘Make us your best offer, let’s not mess about this could be the easiest deal, is a year your best, final offer?’

“And they said ‘Yes, that’s the final offer – that’s what’s there for you’. We said we were not going to sign for just a year and it was ‘I hope you change your mind’ and that was that.”

Morrison finalised a switch to Championship rivals Reading last week, leaving Blues on the lookout for a new skipper.

Here’s how the Bluenoses reacted to the central defender’s revealing interview:

Phil Bagnall: Complete shock. Good defender and captain that scored goals. He will be missed

Robert Nichols: With the signing of Cowley and the others in the pipe line u can understand the club’s policy of going for younger players this season that’s probably why they only offered him a1year deal

What’s happening at Blues?

Craig Wright: Absolutely shocking! A disgrace to treat a player who pretty much played every single game he could outside of the odd injury, but nothing long term. He easily had another 4-5 years at this level. I hope he has success at Reading and gets treat better. All the best Morro

Joe Jones: Absolutely brilliant that he’s actually told us the truth of the matter. Too often we don’t get to know the whys and why nots. Stupid decision by dong. Regardless keep right on and all the best to Morro.

Phillip O’Brien: Bet they looked at his medical records and decided on that , he was brilliant for us but I’m slowly understanding the owners thinking on moving forward

Mac Macker: All the best Morro, thankyou for all you done for us, you deserved a 2 year deal

Jon James: Can’t understand the logic, should have offered him more to keep him just to have continuity at the back. Shame he’s gone.
