West Brom handed transfer boost as Leeds United issue clear stance on wanted pair – Championship rumours

Potential transfer boost

West Bromwich Albion transfer target Matheus Pereira is set to leave Sporting this summer, according to reports in Portugal.

Portuguese news outlet Record (via Sport Witness)  have said that Sporting have fielded a number of offers for the Brazilian winger and both parties have now agreed that a departure is in the best interest of the player.

Albion have already tabled a bid for the 23-year-old which is believed to be a loan deal with an option to sign for €9m next summer. This deal would also see the Baggies pay the Portuguese club €300k up-front with a further €300k should they achieve the promotion.

Despite being ‘far from the demands’ of the club, Record had initially suggested that this was the best bid Sporting had received for the player, who was open to the idea of following in the footsteps of Filip Krovinovic who left the Primeira Liga for The Hawthorns.

However, conflicting reports have now emerged, with O Jogo suggesting that German side Schalke have made an attractive offer for the forward, also with the option to buy.

Clear stance

Leeds director of football Victor Orta is of the opinion that both Kemar Roofe and Kalvin Phillips – the latter being wanted by Aston Villa – will remain at Elland Road this summer.

Phillips, rated at £30m by the Whites, has two years left on his contract and is currently negotiating a new deal with his boyhood club.

Striker Roofe, formerly of West Brom, was the club’s top scorer last season in the Championship and also has top flight admirers.

Orta, though, is optimistic of Leeds’ chances of retaining the pair.

“It’s not a negotiation,” Orta told LeedsLive of Phillips’ contract talks. “He is a Leeds United player and will be a Leeds United player for the season 19/20.

Leeds United want Kalvin Phillips to stay next year 100 per cent.”

Toon eye Ben

New Newcastle boss Steve Bruce wants to bring Preston defender to Tyneside, according to the Sun.

Bruce, who replaced Rafael Benitez this past week, has money to spend as the Magpies seek to boost their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Having sold Ayoze Perez and missed out on West Brom striker Salomon Rondon, the Toon are adding £38m Joelinton from Hoffenheim.

They also, though, are eyeing Burnley starlet Dwight McNeil, who enjoyed a successful breakthrough season at Turf Moor, and Davies of North End.

The centre-back, 23, has been a regular in the Deepdale side over the last couple of years and played 41 times last term for Alex Neil’s men.
