Aston Villa close in on double signing as Manchester United leapfrog Liverpool in race for star – Premier League gossip
Latest reports suggest a deal for Trezeguet to join Villa from Turkish club Kasimpasa is edging ever closer with the two clubs now said to have settled on a fee of around £8.5million.
Head coach Dean Smith and sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch recently jetted out to Egypt to watch Trezeguet in action for his country at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Smith is said to have been impressed by the 24-year-old and Villa have moved to push through a move ahead of the new Premier League season.
Trezeguet is now set to fly in for a medical and could be confirmed as Villa’s ninth summer signing in the next couple of days.
Villa are also close to securing the permanent transfer of Manchester City’s Douglas Luiz.
The Brazilian midfielder flew out to hook up with the Villa squad during their stay in Minnesota and now, the Telegraph reports, a move is imminent.
Klopp should go for Christian
The Dane, who is widely tipped to unite with Eden Hazard and join Real Madrid this summer, has one year left on his deal at Spurs and is expected to leave with no progress being made in negotiations over a fresh contract.
Liverpool, who have been quiet in the market thus far, have been advised to go for Eriksen by former manager turned pundit Dean Saunders.
He said: “[They could] spend it maybe. I think Eriksen could slot into Liverpool’s team, somebody like Eriksen.
“That type of player who will make their midfield a bit more productive.”
Pepe race hots up
Pepe is widely expected to leave Lille, who finished second in Ligue 1, this transfer window; clubs around Europe are keen on him, but now it appears United are in pole position.
Inter Milan have also reportedly tabled a bid for Pepe, who is valued at more than £70m by Lille.
He has been representing his country, Ivory Coast, at the African Nations Cup this summer.
