Manchester United explain Dean Henderson pre season tour squad decision
Solskjaer revealed on Tuesday Henderson, 22, would link up with the rest of the squad in Singapore ahead of Saturday’s friendly with Internazionale, having omitted Henderson from United’s initial tour squad so he could enjoy a holiday.
Henderson reported at United’s Carrington training complex in the first week of pre-season training but the England Under-21 international wants to rejoin newly-promoted Sheffield United on a season-long loan.
The MEN revealed earlier this month Henderson was told to apply for a Chinese visa amid the possibility of him travelling to Shanghai with United next week. United are trying to negotiate a new contract with Henderson as part of any arrangement that takes him back to Sheffield United but a reunion at Bramall Lane is set to be further delayed.
“Of course, we’re debating whether he should travel and come with us or stay and train in England. I thought maybe it was best for him to come here.
“David [de Gea] has a temperature and fever that built up today, so didn’t want to risk him getting worse. Hopefully he’ll play against Inter. And Lee’s injured, so we’ve only got two ‘keepers.”
Henderson only wanted to stay with United this season if he was assured of the number one spot but the club expects to finalise a new contract for De Gea after United return to Europe later this month.
Academy graduate Henderson is contracted to United until 2020 but the club has the option of an additional year.
Sergio Romero started for United in their 4-0 thrashing of Leeds on Wednesday and was replaced at half-time by Joel Pereira.
Romelu Lukaku missed the second pre-season tour match running after picking up a knock in training amid the possibility he could join United’s Saturday opponents, Inter.
“Of course it’s not ideal when you miss training sessions,” Solskjaer added of Lukaku. “He missed yesterday’s towards the end of a session and he’s missed another game today, two chances to play 45 minutes.
“And at this stage of the season it’s important we get everyone fit, so hopefully he’ll be available soon.”
